The Commanders Reception was a special event held on June 26 at the Burton-Middlefield Atwood Mauck American Legion Post #459 to honor the young men and women who attended Buckeye Boys State and Buckeye Girls State. Scholarship were presented to students from Berkshire and Cardinal High School. Each year the Burton-Middlefield Auxiliary of Post #459 sponsors juniors from both Berkshire and Cardinal to Buckeye Girls State. This year it was June 12 to 18 on the campus of Mount Union University, Ohio.
Approximately 25,000 girls gathered to learn about City, County and State Governments. Girls selected for this honor are assigned to one of two political parties-Federalist or Nationalist-and learn to participate in mock government activities. They can run for city, county and state office, work with officials from each area of government and gain first-hand knowledge of the political process. Attendance provides the girls an opportunity to apply and be recommended for awards, honors and scholarship. In past years the Auxiliary committed to sending only two girls, however this year all applicants were outstanding individuals so the decision was made to send all four.
They were Adele Conklin, Julia Losasso and Breanna Pennypacker from Burton and Trish Cesar from Cardinal. Each year Post #459 sponsors junior boys from Berkshire and Cardinal to Buckeye Boys State. The number of boys sponsored depends on the number applying. This year Boy’s State was held June 12 through June 19 at Bowling Green State University. Programming is similar to that of Girl’s State in that the young men experience setting up and running a government. Those attending in 2016 from Berkshire were Justin T. Politzer and Dan Bridavsky. Jake Chilson attended from Cardinal. Mr. Chilson’s attendance was sponsored through Post #459 by the Middlefield Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #9678. Annually, $1,000 scholarships are offered by the Burton-Middlefield Auxiliary of Post #459, one to a student from Berkshire and one to a student from Cardinal with a family member who has or is serving our country. In 2016, the Auxiliary received a total of nine applications which were judged based on a number of criteria. The scholarships were presented to Amber Bricker of Berkshire and Cole Zemelka of Cardinal.
American Legion Post #459 offers, on an annual basis, five scholarships to students in Berkshire and Cardinal. Also awarded is the “Family Member Scholarship” to a student related to a Post member. The 2016 recipients of those scholarships were: The Christofferson Memorial Scholarship awarded to Madiosn Dobay of Cardinal; The Bates Memorial Scholarship awarded to Alec Vizy of Berkshire; The Katz Memorial Scholarship awarded to Cole Zamelka of Cardinal (for engineering student); Post #459 Family Member Scholarship awarded to Ashley Naylor of Champion and two Post #459 General Scholarships awarded to Michelle Shom of Berkshire and Emily Kruse of Cardinal.
