Carl and Dottie Hofstetter, owners of Karl’s Jewelry in Middlefield, are retiring after 54 wonderful years. The next generation in the family will be taking the store through its next era.
“We are looking forward to retirement,” says Dottie. “This has been a wonderful life for us and we are so thankful to this community for their loyal patronage over the years. We are leaving the store in very capable hands and are looking forward to the changes that our next generation will make.”
The Hofstetters enjoy many fond memories. “We have the fourth largest Amish population in this area, and they are our customers,” said Dottie. “We remember an eventful Christmas eve, years ago, Carl and his father had to deliver a grandfather clock in a snowstorm to an Amish home.”
The store originated as Shute Jewelers in 1918 and was located across the street from the current location. It was owned by Leo Shute, Carl’s great uncle. Later it was purchased in 1940 by Carl Sr. and then in 1964 by current owners, Carl and Dottie. Wondering why Karl is spelled with a ‘K’ in the company name? It is because Carl Sr. thought ‘K’ looked better on the sign.
