Cardinal BOE Hires New High School Principal

The Cardinal Local School District is excited to introduce Dr. Markiel Perkins as the new Cardinal High School Principal! The Cardinal Board of Education approved his hiring with a 5-0 vote on June 12. Perkins replaces former Principal Bill Kermavner, who is currently serving as the Interim Superintendent for the district.

Dr. Perkins comes to Cardinal from Cleveland Preparatory Academy where he has served as principal since 2017. Prior to his work at Cleveland Prep, Dr. Perkins was employed as a Success Coach and Athletic Director at the Nexus Academy of Cleveland, was the Center Director for the Educational Services of America and started his career as an Intervention Specialist for the Berea City School District.

In addition to his education career, Dr. Perkins spent 11 years with the United States Coast Guard as a Petty Officer First-Class Boatswains Mate from 2003-2014. He received several accolades during his service, including two Meritorious Team Commendation Medals, Sailor of the Quarter, three Good Conduct Medals, and was selected as the Great Lakes Coast Guard Hometown Hero. Dr. Perkins also served on the Berea City Council from 1999-2003.

“This is  tremendous opportunity for me and I am grateful to the Board and hiring committee for putting their trust in my abilities,” Perkins said. “From being in the military, I possess a strong work ethic. I have and expect to work extended hours to show my worth to the team, to the community, and most importantly to the staff, students, and families who walk our halls at Cardinal High School every day. Attention to detail is ‘sweating the small stuff’ and I believe if the ‘small stuff’ is not heeded than it becomes ‘big stuff.’ I believe in self-accountability and have high expectations for myself and others. I look forward to joining the Huskie family and getting to know all of the wonderful people in this great community.”
