Discover Holbrook

Whether or not you’ve already discovered your newest Geauga Park District park on your own, let one of our naturalists guide you along the trails of Holbrook Hollows this season, discovering a beautiful winter landscape of forest and meadow. Registration is required at www.geaugaparkdistrict.org or 440-286-9516 for the Holbrook Hollows Winter Hike on Sunday, Dec. 8 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Together we’ll hike up to three miles over hilly terrain, rain or shine. Dress for the weather and be prepared to explore!

Holbrook Hollows is located at 7250 Country Lane in Bainbridge Township. Four trails total 2.8 miles at this 129-acre park, which also provides access to Cleveland Metroparks’ South Chagrin Reservation bridle trail. Amenities here also include a reservable lodge with a back garage door opening to a large tiered patio and, nearby, a Nature-themed/based playground with hillside slides and agility ropes.

 Celebrate the Longest Night

Make the most out of the longest night of your year during Geauga Park District’s annual Winter Solstice Celebration. On Saturday, Dec. 21 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., a visit to The West Woods and its nature center will include fun, family-friendly exploration of the roots of our modern holiday celebrations.

Indoors, take in cookies and hot cider while listening to festive music of the season performed by the Pilgrim Brass Choir. Also, children are invited to try a free craft, making a lantern from a recycled water bottle and tissue paper. Then, outdoors, stroll the self-guided Solstice Traditions Trail, a magical, candlelit route through the forest; warm up by a bonfire; and stop by the stage area to watch costumed interpreters perform interactive skits highlighting solstice traditions of past civilizations, i.e. the Druids and the origins of mistletoe.

Dress for time spent both indoors and out. Only indoor portions will be fully wheelchair/stroller accessible. The West Woods is located at 9465 Kinsman Road (Route 87) in Russell. Registration is not required for this free event. Call 440-279-0880 with questions.

Free Snowshoe Borrowing

Back this year: Geauga Park District’s popular free snowshoe borrowing program at The West Woods. Also new in 2020 will be youth snowshoes for ages 3 through 6.

The deeper the snow, the better, with at least a few inches a must. But whatever the weather, snowshoes are now waiting in The West Woods Nature Center’s lobby for your use when the time is right. Call 440-279-0880 to check availability; no reservations are taken so all snowshoes are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Borrowing can take place any time 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and last up to two hours. One must be at least 18 years old to check out a pair; anyone younger must be accompanied by an adult, and no one under 40 pounds may use the currently stocked snowshoes. Keep an eye on Geauga Park District’s social media, or News & Updates webpage, to learn when snowshoes become available for children under 40 pounds.

Registrants must sign a waiver form and leave a driver’s license as a security deposit. Please note that out-of-county residents are charged a $5 rental fee (credit card only); Geauga County residents continue to enjoy this service free of charge. Snowshoes may not leave The West Woods except for registered programs. The West Woods Nature Center is located at 9465 Kinsman Road (Route 87) in Russell.
