There’s a kids’ song that many of us know. Have you ever sung “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands”? It speaks of God’s power and providence, His sovereignty and His care. God has “the itty bitty baby”, “you and me brother”, as well as “you and me sister” all in His hands! In these days of pandemic uncertainly it is indeed reassuring to know that God is in control. Psalm 47:8 tells us that “God reigns over the nations; God is seated on His holy throne.” Think about that for a minute… God is still on His throne.
You may be thinking, “If God is on the throne, why is our world in such a precarious situation?” Why doesn’t the Lord do something to change our circumstances for the better? When is this whole mess going to end? Those are good questions to ponder. None of us likes living with so many unknowns. We don’t know when the COVID-19 virus will run out of steam, if someone close to us will be infected, or if the world economy will continue to decline and perhaps teeter on collapse. We don’t even know who will be our President 6 months from now. Just where is God’s steadying hand in all this?
God is always working purposely. He has a divine agenda. His goal is not simply to make us comfortable or to maintain the status quo. He is seeking to draw each one of us to Himself. Like a loving Father, He desires a relationship that brings us in close. You may not see God as a “major player” in your life. You may think that everything depends on you and your decisions. However, you are only partly right. God is always there. Because He made you and loves you, He will not walk away. Your best life is always discovered with God in the picture. Jesus said, “My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.”
Because we are rebels who have pushed God out and gone our own independent way, God allows us to face challenges and hardships. When we struggle with needs in our lives, we are much more apt to reach out to our Savior. C.S. Lewis said that “Pain insists upon being attended to. God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains; It is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world…” When your life is in cruise control you are quite content to forget or even deny there is a God. However, when the heat is on and you have no way out, a cry for help is likely to be heard.
Jesus invites us to take refuge and find peace in His strong and loving arms. He tells us not to worry. “Look at the birds of the air… your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you can add a single hour to his life? Don’t worry about tomorrow… He already knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God and His righteousness above all else, and He will give you everything you need.”
God has the whole world in His hands. You, me, and the itty bitty baby. Keep the faith. God is on His throne.
